Brass beds have long been prized as objects that signify wealth and luxury. The cost of brass is much higher than other metals used in making beds and the skill level associated with making a high quality brass bed is high. Their is little room for mistakes in crafting a well made brass bed. Attention to details is essential. Even simply polishing a brass bed requires such a high level of skill it is considered a specialty trade.

There are many types of brass used in making brass beds. Being an alloy of copper and zinc, a multitude of mixtures and combinations of materials are used to stretch the costly brass. High quality manufactures use cartridge brass and use traditional techniques for pouring  the brass parts used in the finest brass beds. Cheap stamped parts will not do for an item that denotes luxury and quality.

While traditional brass bed makers have become quite rare, there are some qualities to look for when buying a brass bed. Look for manufacturers who use thick walled solid brass tubing, solid brass, heavy cast parts and the correct brass fasteners to build the bed. Many of today's "brass beds" are simply low cost, thin pot metals with a microscopic brass or colored zinc coating. Worse yet is simply a brass colored paint finish. These beds will not age well structurally nor get the authentic patina that a real brass bed will achieve over the lifetime of the bed. A poor quality brass bed will give away its secret in a room regardless of the bedding or its surroundings. Brass beds are a style that cannot be cheated with good results.

Investment in a true and traditional brass bed is one that will provide not only years of enjoyment but will become a family heirloom to be passed through the generations. For high quality brass beds made with traditional materials and skills, see some great examples on the internet at Charles P. Rogers, America's oldest bed maker.
